8-digit BIN
What is the Bank Identification Number (BIN) ?
The Bank Identification Number (BIN) only identifies the card brand, issuers and other payment information. Currently, the BIN is the first 6 digits of the card number. Due to an increasing demand for BINs by issuers, the length of the BIN will be extended from 6 to 8 digits from April 2022.
What will change ?
For co-badged Visa, Mastercard and CB cards, the length of the BIN will increase from 6 to 8 digits from April 2022. Until then, Visa and Mastercard will redistribute the BINs between issuers as they go along. Some of them will have the same 6-digit BIN, but increased by two to 8 digits, while for others the BIN will be slightly modified or completely renewed.
Actions required at your level as a merchant
If you are performing BIN-based operations, it is recommended that you check their compatibility with the new 8-digit format.
Impact on the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)
It is not expected that the general PCI regulations will change with the introduction of the 8-digit BIN.
